subject: Are You A Good Candidate For Cosmetic Dentistry? [print this page]

There are a lot of different types of cosmetic dentistry procedures out there. These are dental procedures which would be performed by your Palatine dentist that are designed to correct primarily cosmetic issues. These are not procedures which are done because your dentist feels like there is a health problem which needs to be addressed with your teeth. Instead, these are elective procedures that people choose to do because they feel that they want to have their smile improved in some way.

First of all, one of the most commonly undergone cosmetic procedures is that of teeth whitening. When people get their teeth whitened, it is usually to help remove staining which is caused by smoking, or by drinking staining substances such as coffee or red wine. Any of these causes of teeth stains would make a person a good candidate for whitening. There are other causes of discolored teeth though. For example, some people experience a graying of tooth color while on certain medications. This type of person would not be as good a candidate for teeth whitening.

Veneers are another common cosmetic procedure. These are an artificial covering which is placed over the tooth to improve its color, uniformity, and shape. Veneers require maintenance; otherwise they can wear down with time and break sooner than they should. This is why the person who is a good candidate for veneers is a person with good overall oral health. Someone who can follow the protocol for looking after their veneers as set out by the dentist, and who is disciplined about oral hygiene makes a good veneer subject.

Implants are when a tooth or a section of teeth is replaced permanently, as opposed to dentures which can be removed at will. If you are going to get dental implants though, you need a strong supporting structure for the implants to be anchored to. This means that you need to have a healthy gum and bone structure which surrounds the tooth. Poor oral hygiene habits, like any kind of tobacco use, makes a person a poor candidate for implants.

Crowns, bridges, and teeth straightening methods like Invisalign are all other types of cosmetic procedures which some people may be more qualified for than others. Although each procedure needs to be assessed on a case by case basis, you will be a more qualified person for a procedure if you maintain good oral hygiene at all times.
