Getting Kids Attention With Omega-3 Fatty Acids

The connection between attention deficiency and Essential Fatty Acids (EFA), particularly omega 3 fatty acids, first became apparent in 1981 when a detailed survey of the characteristics of hyperactive children was conducted by the Hyperactive Childrens Support Group (HCSG) in Britain. The survey discovered a common feature in the dietary pattern of hyperactive childrenall of them were deficient in EFA.1

Subsequent studies continued to confirm this relationship and scientists are probing further to find out if EFA deficiency could be one of the leading causes for the prevalence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a neurological behavior disorder seen mostly in children. So far, results have been inconclusive, but many studies strongly suggest that an adequate intake of omega 3 fatty acids, along with a healthy diet, may have significant proactive impact on curbing symptoms of ADHD.2

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), roughly 5 to 7 percent of American school-aged children have ADHD.3 ADHD symptoms may carry into adulthood and the National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 4.1 percent of adults have ADHD.4

In a recent study conducted in 2010 at Australias Telethon Institute for Child Health Research, scientists were able to associate western dietary patterns with ADHD in adolescents. The research team recorded the detailed dietary patterns of 1,799 adolescents and classified them into western or healthy patterns. In the study:A healthy diet was marked by high intake of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish. Children who followed a healthy diet had high amounts of folate and fiber in the diet and a healthy ratio of omega 3 against omega 6.A western diet was marked by higher consumption of takeaway foods, processed, fried and refined foods, confectionerygenerally a higher intake of total fat, saturated fat, refined sugar and sodium.Children who followed a healthy diet had high amounts of folate and fiber in the diet and a healthy ratio of omega 3 against omega 6.5

Out of 1,799 adolescents, 115 had already been diagnosed with ADHD. Dr. Wendy Oddy who led the research study said, "We found a diet high in the Western pattern of foods was associated with more than double the risk of having an ADHD diagnosis compared with a diet low in the Western pattern, after adjusting for numerous other social and family influences."

An adequate intake of omega 3 fatty acids is beneficial for all age groups, not just children and adolescents. These essential fatty acids are vital to health and necessary for making brain and nerve tissues, for proper development of the brain, healthy mental functions, and supporting the immune system. They are also known to support heart health, vision and promote healthy aging.
