subject: Medicare Supplement Plan Offered By The American Association Of Retired Persons [print this page] I?ve been traveling abroad for a few years already and the most frightening medical emergency I have experienced happened in Afghanistan where a young Frenchwoman suddenly suffered from an appendicitis attack. In the middle of an empty desert, her pain began. More Americans prefer traveling to remote places in the world which at times, causes some of them to suffer from life threatening sicknesses or accidents where there is limited proper medical care and sometimes none at all.
The bus that was loaded with Afghans broke down in the middle of nowhere just a couple of hours out of Kandahar. A westerner companion of the Frenchwoman approached me and I could tell that she definitely was worried. Her friend was in an excruciating pain as she stretched out in the back seat. A wet handkerchief was placed on the Frenchwoman's forehead to make her feel better during the day's scorching heat.
After a few hours, some passengers didn't have second thoughts in hopping on a truck that passed even though it wasn't going near Kabul. Good enough, I was able to stop a European sedan at the time when the Frenchwoman was sobbing uncontrollably from her piercing stomach pain. In the car, two good Swiss souls agreed to take the women to Kabul. I was able to ride in the bus that came after a long while along with the Afghan passengers. The Frenchwoman's companion went for a visit in my hotel just to show her gratitude. After she and the Swiss couple called the embassy in Kabul, it was in the hospital where the French Embassy guided her friend to undergo an immediate appendectomy. The woman with appendicitis was fine but still was shocked by the close call.
The association in Maryland for safe international travel in 60 foreign countries provides travelers with precautionary measures whenever faced with dangerous road circumstances. It depends on which country it is reporting about bizarre driving practices, accident prone roads, dangers of driving at night or livestock on the road. It is more perilous to rent cars and buses for there is lack of safety standards.
In Turkey, a 25 year old Bethesda medical student was killed in a bus accident which is the reason why the association was founded. Egypt, Kenya, South Korea, Turkey and Morocco are the countries with the most dangerous roads according to the non-profit organization accident statistics. Statistics is not provided by India but it might be on the list. Each country will now get a road hazard information sheet for the US State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs has been urged by the association. Purchase a medical evacuation policy and hold sufficient health insurance. If ever you turn ill or are injured, the US Embassy has the capacity to help you but you should take care of the expenses. Evacuating by air can cost you a fortune if you are to be transferred from a remote place to an emergency hospital. There are two things you need to do first before travelling abroad according to the State Department which is first, know the kind of medical services your health insurance covers and second, carry an insurance policy identity card and a claim form.
The American Association of Retired Persons covers senior citizen's treatment expenses outside the country through the use of a Medicare supplement plan, but the Social Security Medicare is not capable of providing one. On an annual or per trip basis, a few firms offer medical evacuation insurance. Insurance can be bought directly from the company and also can be bought by travel agents.
If ever the worst happens, call the nearest US Embassy. Other medical facilities and a list of local doctors are the two things you could from the embassy. Most likely, the embassy personnel will take necessary steps to insure Americans the best medical care. It is those most Americans who dare to visit remote places are the ones benefiting this. Proper treatment, a better facility and friends or relatives are the three things that an accident victim in a foreign country needs which are monitored by the officers.
