subject: Nail Fungus Treatment [print this page]

. Due to lack of effective and safe treatment many people delay in treatment of the nail fungus. It is always better to treat infection on time as there are chances of the fungus to affect other nails or deteriorate with time. Nail fungus infection can be treated by using lacquers for minor infections with 1 or 2 nails affected at the tip. This treatment takes more than a year to recover as lacquers are not particularly effective. If you have been having problems while sleeping or even during the day while your foot hurts terribly, you know that you have had a foot cramp.

It is always best to give your foot some rest in case a cramp has taken place. So try to stay in bed for the time being, instead of putting more strain over it. Nail fungus or a nail fungal infection is very common. It can affect anyone including people above the age of 70. It is found to affect men more than women and is more common as one gets older. Fungal nail infections mainly occur on the toes as the conditions are right for the growth of the fungus. Feet that are enclosed in shoes all day long get hot and sweaty. The most common symptoms of a nail infection are the thickening and discoloration of the nail. The nail will start to grow outwards or inwards and ridges will appear on it.

The medication needs to be taken daily and will take about 6 months to eliminate the infection and after that it will take time for the nail to grow back. The oral and surface treatment is found to work in only 67% of the cases. Now there is an alternative treatment that people can opt for. Laser nail treatment requires as little as one session that lasts less than an hour. You are advised to carry a new pair of socks to wear after the treatment. Your shoes are sprayed as well. Smelly feet are usually caused by sweat. Sweet in itself has no smell but it is a great breeding ground for bacteria that produces bad odours.

It is also best not to wear your shoes two days in a row. This will allow your shoes to air and dry before you wear it again. If your shoes are smelly, best to dry it under the sun. The sun's UV ray is proven to kill bacteria and will therefore eliminate the odor. Aside from making sure your feet are clean before your wear your shoes, you can also stop the odor by sprinkling your feet and your shoes with bicarbonate of soda. Ingrown toenails often form due to an abnormality in the anatomy of the toe and nail, a condition which is usually inherited.

A technique dating back to 1959 targets the toe itself, rather than the toenail. The Vandenbos procedure is not commonly performed, with only a few United States surgeons conducting the highly invasive and destructive procedure. The technique has been shown to be highly effective; however the invasive nature has come under considerable criticism for leaving the toe open to serious infection.

If the problem is diagnosed early enough, treatments include applying ice packs, rest, stretching excercises and pain relief medicines such as anti-inflammatory pills. It is sometimes necessary for some to wear orthotics, which is a type of insert for the shoe, in a bid to eleviate the pain. In order for the orthotics to work properly, It is vital for them to provide sufficient support of the orthoses.
