subject: Treatment For Ovarian Cysts – What's The Best Option For You? [print this page]

Multiple types of ovarian cysts exist and what is a good treatment for one will not be effective for another. Because many kinds of ovarian cysts are harmless, they won't even present a great many symptoms for you to notice.

Other varieties of ovarian cysts however are not harmless and potentially could threaten your health or even your life. If you have symptoms of ovarian cysts, or your physician suspects them, he or she will take steps to confirm the presence of cysts and to institute treatment for ovarian cysts using one of several methods that are available to the medical community.

Most ovarian cysts are actually functional. They are the cysts that develop at the end of the monthly cycle that actually contain the eggs and will be gone without any kind of treatment once the eggs have been released and made their way into the remainder of your reproductive system.

In a few cases however, the ovarian cysts do not clear up of their own accord. They may continue growing, may wind around other parts of the system and eradicate the blood supply, or may actually present with cancerous cells in them that need to be treated immediately.

When this is the case, it is important to know that you will in some cases feel symptoms such as fullness, pain, breakthrough bleeding and other abnormal feelings.

A visit to your doctor will confirm the presence of ovarian cysts and generally your physician will talk to you about ovarian cyst treatment options that you may have.

One of the first options that most physicians will consider is the easiest way to treat ovarian cysts. It is the use of oral contraceptives, or birth control pills. What makes this effective when the cysts are recurring but non cancerous, is that it actually prevents the release of eggs from your ovaries and the cysts simply don't occur.

The estrogen and the progesterone in the pills causes that eggs are not released, the uterine lining does not build up and you will often cease your periods, which is not problematic for many women.

While this is not an effective treatment in the case of cancerous or precancerous cells, or for those women who cannot take birth control pills, in many cases it is a popular option in that it is non-invasive.

The second method of treatment that may be prescribed is the removal of any cysts in the area, as well as sometimes parts of organs which are affected. This can be used as a treatment for some type of cancerous cell growth but is generally useful for treating non cancerous cysts. You do retain the ability to conceive and have children so it is again, a popular treatment in that you do not lose the ability to bear children.

The last method of ovarian cyst treatments does render you unable to have children but may be the only option for those with cancerous cells present. The Oophorectomy--or surgical removal of the ovary, either one or both, means that you will lose the ability to have children, on one or both sides you will not have an ovary present meaning that eggs cannot be released.

It tends to be the court of last resort for physicians and when prescribed should be carefully looked at as a means to prevent further injury to your body.
