subject: Barleans - Fish Oil Found To Decrease Risk Of Breast Cancer [print this page]

Fish oil supplements have been found to decrease a womans risk of developing breast cancer, according to a recent study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. Those who regularly used fish-oil supplements, such as Barleans, were one-third less likely to get breast cancer. The study polled more than 35,000 post-menopausal women ages 50 to 76.

Researchers found that after controlling for other breast cancer risk factors - such as age, weight, alcohol consumption and physical fitness - the women were still at a lower risk of getting breast cancer in the six years after the study began if they took fish oil supplements.

Harvard University just began another clinical study to examine the effects of taking fish oil on cancer, heart disease, and stroke in older people.

Fish oil is regarded as a source of Omega-3 acid, a healthy fatty acid that many Americans lack sufficient amounts of in their diet. Doctors recommend that most people take a fish oil supplement and try to increase their intake of fatty fishes and certain nuts.

Several clinical trials similar to the Harvard one have found that fish oil lowers triglycerides, high blood pressure, and the risk of heart attack. Fish oil also has anti-inflammatory abilities. This could prove to be a major breast cancer research breakthrough, since some scientists believe cancer may grow more rapidly in the presence of inflammation in the body.

Fish oil supplements like Barleans are generally considered safe, with only minor side effects like stomach upset and heartburn when used as directed. If you are concerned are breast cancer or certain heart diseases, talk to your doctor about incorporating fish oil supplements are part of a healthy lifestyle.
