subject: Let's Celebrate Our Parents [print this page]

Family is very important in everyone's life and fortunately, there were people who considered that our parents deserve being celebrated. Thus, I am now going to present Mother's and Father's Day, as they originated in the U.S.

Mother's Day is celebrated in the U.S. on the second Sunday in May, when children treat their mothers to something special: either bought or hand-made gifts and cards, breakfast in bed, dinner at restaurants and red carnations, the official Mother's Day flower.

But who had the idea of celebrating our mothers? Two young women: Julia Ward Howe, in 1872 and Anna Jarvis, in 1905. Anna Jarvis's mother was a devoted mother and wife, who supported her husband and daughter throughout their lives, in both towns where they lived: West Virginia and Philadelphia. Her favourite flowers were white carnations, and Anna helped her mother take care of these flowers in their garden. When Anna's mother died, she asked the minister in West Virginia to hold a sermon in her mother's memory; at the same time, a sermon was held in Philadelphia.

Then, Anna wrote to members of Congress, asking them to set aside a day to honour mothers, her letters being a success: in 1910, the second Sunday in May was established as Mother's Day in west Virginia, while in 1914 was declared the first national Mother's Day by President Woodrow Wilson.

Father's Day became national in the U.S. after Mother's Day began being celebrated. It all started when Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington, heard a sermon in the honor of all mothers. She felt that her father, who raised six children by himself and fought in the Civil War deserved such a sermon; and not only her father, but all fathers needed their children's appreciation.

Thus, Sonora asked the minister at the church where she went to have a sermon honoring her father on June 5, her father's birthday. But she spoke to the minister too close to the date and he did not have time to prepare a nice sermon until that date. Nevertheless, he did hold a ceremony on the 19th of June, 1909. In 1924, after many organizations tried to convince the Congress to establish a national Father's Day, President Calvin Coolidge declared such a celebration.

Nowadays, children in America celebrate their father's national day by giving them gifts, such as ties, shirts, sport items, cards, which can be sentimental or whimsical, so that they make their fathers laugh and sometimes drawings made by children.
