Turnip Or Pumpink Lanterns For Halloween

Halloween (celebrated annually on October 31st) at first was a celebration of the Celtic traditions while it was named Samhain (nearly translates to:Summer's End) also has roots back to old Scottish custom All Hallows Eve since the 16th century.

For the 19th century Halloween almost disappeared from most Irish countries, also the symbols along with the typical traditions. For example, the main motif, in the Celtic All Hallows Eve was the turnip lanterns which were carved and hollowed out to stay clear of the bad spirit that used to be believed to bring the darkness also the wintry conditions following the harvest time of year.

The Isle of Man up until today still has kept some of its tradition.

This original Celtic tradition Hop Tuu Naa takes place following the harvest celebrating the beginning of another harvest season. In our day it's a little of a combinationnew ritual, however children dress up into creepy costumes taking along a fixed turnip lamp leaving off house to house performing Gaelic singings and wondering for candy, food or else money. Fairly like to the trick or treat practice, however here Gaelic were singing and collecting foods before winter time so it wasn't linked to the tricks. When Halloween was brought to America in the nineteenth century by Irish incomers, the lantern motif quickly was replaced by pumpkins since they were more widespread and it was easier to cut. Over time, Halloween in North America grew and became recognized as an American holiday. The occasion obtained its modern images and traditions from US since the nineteenth century. Until then Halloween was related to the Harvest, scarecrow, pumpkin, corn husks, then when Horror movies become popular (Dracula, Frankenstein)scaring away the evil spirits mass production has started in the form of Halloween celebration so the plethora of spooky characters become wider and wider. Above all Dracula's character was the most emphasized based on Bram Stoke novel.. His novel is built upon his studies he made in certain European countries which then particularly Transylvania gave the perfect background to the story.. For this reason Romanians claim the title of Land of Vampires. Every year in the Sighisoara Castle I believe the most unique Halloween party is held in Dracula's place. Elsewhere in Europe, the recognition of Halloween is rise above with All Saints' Day, All Souls' Day, Zaduszki (Polish tradition). Most are connected to the Harvest fest when farmers were finished with harvest and were left for winter without food and income. Particularly Martinisingen is very similar to Trick or Treat except that it was held on November 10 and kids were not dressed up but were sent to sing for rich residents to collect food or money for worse times.
