Cheap Auto Insurance For Teens And Ways To Lower Premiums For Young Drivers

Many parents know how expensive insurance is, especially for teenagers. There are ways to buy cheap auto insurance for teens, as long as you are willing to take time to do so. Most parents simply contact their current car insurance provider and ask how much it will cost to place their teen driver on the existing policy. Unless the teen is 18 years old, she will have to be placed on an adult's policy.

The addition of a teenage driver causes premium amounts to rise significantly. As the teen gets older, the price will go down. Males are considered more high-risk than females so their premiums are more costly. One way to lower premium amounts for any sex of teenager is by enrolling the teen in a driver's education course.

Most schools offer this course to 15 year olds who will be 16 within the next 6 months. This is often a summer course through schools, but can be taken year around at various locations.

Once the course is completed and certification is issued, this information can be turned in to the insurance company when it comes time to insure the teen driver. Insurance companies consider this course to be a step forward in becoming a better driver. Anything that will eliminate some of the high-risk factors of teenage drivers is always a plus.

Students with good grades are given a discount on insurance as well. If the teen can maintain at least a B-average, then a discount is offered by most insurance companies. By having good grades, teenagers are showing they are more responsible and insurance companies feel this carries on to the roadways as well. It can also be a good incentive for teens that have to pay their own insurance premiums. If they are making the payments, then they might be more inclined to keep up those good grades for lower rates.

Teens driving newer cars tend to also have lower premium rates. A newer vehicle is often considered to be safer than an older one, except for some sports cars. Many sports cars actually cost more to insure because of they are thought to be high-risk. Safety features on newer models of cars usually qualify for discounted premium amounts. These features include; anti-lock brakes, anti-theft devices, air bags and automatic seat belts. Cheap auto insurance for teens is possible to find. Be sure to find out if your teen qualifies for any of the discounts mentioned above.
