Film Festivals in Croatia

At the start, I want to say that on these festivals you probably wont see much of the international movies stars but as for the movies those are pretty god way to discover Croatian film industry, and of course to have some fun in original places. So let's start.

Pula Film Festival It is the oldest and most popular Croatian Film Festival which is being held annually in ancient Roman amphitheatre known as Arena in town Pula which is situated on the top of peninsula Istria (North Adriatic). The main prize of Festival is Golden Arena and all films in competition are Croatian. Pula Film Festival gives a very good perspective of Croatian mainstream cinematography, and it is special because of its venue - Arena ancient roman amphitheatre in combination with modern film industry. Festival is held during summer, usually in July or August.

Motovun Film Festival Is second Croatian Film Festival by popularity but something completely different then Pula. As much as Pula Film Festival is official, Motovun is unofficial. Festival is held in a small Croatian town called Motovun which is situated in the mainland of peninsula Istria. Motovun Film Festival is widely popular among Croatian youth, especially students. Every year there is organized camp for visitors on the foothills of Motovun, and movie projections are held through city squares. Time of festival is naturally summer late Jully or early August. On this festival you can see independent movies from all around the world.

Split Film Festival Is held in city of Split, and it is dedicated to experimental film and video. Except from films on this festival audience and artists can enjoy interactive media, installations, performances, retrospectives workshops and discussions. Split Film Festival is usually held in September and this year date is from 11th to 18th September, so if you are accidentally on your vacation somewhere near feel free to drop by.

Libertas Film Festival - Except from being held in Dubrovnik, which is enough reason to visit it, Libertas offers feature movies and documentarys which promote freedom. Selection of movies is from all of the world. Libertas Film festival is designed as an addition to Dubrovnik summer offer of cultural events. This is one of the rare Croatian Film Festivals on which you can meet some international movie star. Official prize of festival is calle Dubravka (Croatian female name)

Animafest Is one of the most famous festivals of animated films in the world. It is been held in june in capital of Croatia Zagreb. Festival is divided in two parts: short movies and feature film. Each part is been held biannually, so each odd-numbered year is devoted to feature film and even-numbered one to short film. Lovers of animation should visit this Festival by all means.
