Watercan, Performing Charity Work In Africa Since 1987

For certain countries in the global south, poverty and efficient water supply continue to be a major challenge, which is why WaterCan charity work throughout eastern Africa is so important. Through the generosity of western donors and supporters, WaterCan supports clean water and sanitation projects in communities throughout Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Ethiopia that help to assure a better future for children, women and men. WaterCan helps these communities by providing easy access to clean water, basic sanitation, and hygiene education and by putting emphasis on community involvement for sustainable solutions to worldwide poverty.

The need for clean water is an important issue for many developing countries because consuming dirty water leads to many different diseases. . WaterCan understands the importance of providing easy access to water wells and other locally appropriate clean water sources in rural and urban African communities, and keeps sustainability top of mind by using low-cost and locally appropriate technologies.. By providing long-term sustainable development initiatives using such technology as the AFRODEV [a uniquely African-manufactured hand pump], WaterCan ensures that its efforts will last and that these countries will benefit from better living conditions in future years.

In addition to providing clean drinking water and basic sanitation, an essential part of WaterCan's leading Charity programs is hygiene education for members of African communities. Easy access to clean, safe water facilitates good hygiene practices, which are promoted throughout the community by student health clubs and women's groups. WaterCan's African partner organizations works hard to provide the necessary information about basic hygiene to community members to help them prevent skin conditions and health problems associated with poor hygiene and consumption of tainted water. Hygiene education is provided to all members of the community, young and old.

Community involvement is another major part of WaterCan's work; it is essential to ensure the success and sustainability of all the efforts made towards water access, sanitation and hygiene education. WaterCan works directly in partnership with indigenous organizations of eastern Africa to help empower communities to help themselves and their peers. WaterCan does not only help communities in developing African countriesto gain access to water, sanitation and hygiene education, , but offer communities the tools necessary to maintain the new infrastructure over the long term. A part of those Charity programs is also focusing on involving women in the communities.
