The Bund - A Place To Relax And Enjoy The Ambiance

After developing at a mind-numbingly fast pace, the Shanghai of today can slightly overwhelm the senses. A deep breath and a feel for the unknown is all that is needed to fall in love with this chic, vibrant metropolis. Growing beyond the dream China has for its future, Shanghai has managed to seamlessly embrace the fast-paced lifestyle adopted by 21st century tycoons who have made this futuristic hub their home.

Stretching through the Huangpu River that was the core of the English concession of Shanghai in the past, The Bund is considered to be one of the city"s most popular tourist destinations. In the early 1840s, when the concession was brought into force, The Bund was a towpath of which the Chinese made use. But when the wharves were built, the path was no longer needed. Today, this towpath has been turned into a park that runs along the river. Since Shanghai as a city has sunk over 2m, The Bund had to be raised over 10m during the prevailing years to prevent it from flooding.

The Bund as we see it today, is the result of modernization that was carried out throughout the 1800 right up until the 1920s. Ranging from colonial-style buildings to gothic turrets and then later on to the more "high-end" structures such as banks and companies taking over, it now includes most of the cultural verve of the city. The Bund encompasses the People"s Park, Nanjing Road and People"s Square as well as many official buildings such as the Union Insurance Building; the HSBC headquarters and Customs House taking architectural precedent. There is today a height restriction when constructing on The Bund. This could be one of the reasons that the newest building, the Russo-Asiatic Bank is barely seen above the other structures that are scattered in the area.
