Christmas Crayons- A How to Guide

Items Required: Old Crayons in Holiday Colors (new ones will work as well), Mini Muffin Tin, Mini Cupcake Liners (optional), Oven

Variation: Prescription Pill Bottles, Several Used Metal Cans (rinsed out), Broken Crayon Pieces, Wooden Stick (for stirring)

Remove the paper wrapping from several crayons in holiday colors. Some popular color choices include: red, green, white, silver and gold.

Break the crayons into small pieces. Try breaking each full size crayon into 4 or 5 pieces. Make sure you break up a variety of colored crayons as color variation makes these crayons fun.

Preheat your over to 300 degrees.

While the oven is heating place several crayon pieces into muffin tin bottoms. Generally you will want to fill the tin about half full. You may choose to use cupcake liners, but the crayons will pop out without using liners once they are completed. Create color combinations in each cup by adding a variety of colored crayons. Consider these popular combinations: red/green, red/green/white, red/green/gold, red/white, etc.

Once you have filled each muffin cup, place the tray in the heated oven for approximately 10 minutes.

Watch the crayons while in the oven and remove them one they are completely melted.

Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.

Once the crayons are cool, they will easily pop out of the muffin tin when it is turned over.

Package these crayons in simple clear plastic bags and tie with a ribbon for holiday gifting.

Variation

If you enjoyed making the first set of crayons, try making these layered crayons.

Sort your peeled crayon pieces into colored groups. On the stove top, heat a pot of water until it comes to a low boil.

Place a washed out metal can into the hot water bath. This will act as a double boiler for melting the crayons.

Place several broken crayon pieces into the bottom of the can.

Stir the pieces in the can placed in the hot water bath until they melt completely.

While the melted crayons are still hot, pour into the bottom of the pill bottle. The amount used in each bottle will vary depending on how thick you want each layer of color in your completed crayons.

Let each layer cool completely before repeating the process with additional colors.

Once cooled, the crayons will be easily removed by tapping the bottom of the container. If you have trouble, insert a knife between the crayon and the container.
