In the air: the FCC Wireless World Travel Tips Takes Off

As my children are more than happy to remind me, there is finally summer and help kick it to the Federal Communications Commission today as the beginning of the Wireless World Travel Week. In order to educate tourists on the global communication challenges, the agency provides daily news video blog explains the equipment and strategy services abroad and useful communications tip sheet for travelers with topics ranging from foreign call options to using cheaper VoIP services on the move. FCC will also be tweeting guidance communications travel during the week.

According to the FCC, Americans take more than 60 million foreign trips a year. Given that Verizon Wireless, the carrier with the U.S., most customers continue to use the CDMA technology, is a safe bet that many travelers do not have a phone that works abroad. Verizon does not sell a double, or world phones that use GSM SIM cards, and radio, but most Verizon phones are not used around the world. And even GSM phones with AT T and T-Mobile can gain compliance matters relating to networks outside the U.S. as in other countries may use different radio frequencies.

Overall, the FCC did a nice job in this weeks kick-off the blog and tip sheet. post a simple overview GSM roaming and challenges , along with a list of dos and donts before and during travel. I tip sheet contains contact information for all four major U.S. carriers for research purposes, bullet-point list of Savvy Traveler strategy and a brief discussion of VoIP services, including some discussed in the past: Skype Fring and Truphone . Regardless of where you stand on FCC and net neutrality challenges , you have to give the FCC just this week a public awareness effort, which is great during the holidays now that the children are of school age.
