subject: Reduce Cavity Formation Through Responsible Care For Teeth [print this page]

A TV commercial showing a child who boasts about having only one cavity reveals to us the sad state of the nation's dental health. By the time he reaches 21, the child will have had cavities in most of his teeth.

The existence of cavities is rampant. Why this is so is a result of many different reasons. Sometimes, cases of cavities are passed on to the next generations just like heart disease. On the other hand, just because your grandfather had good teeth is no reason to neglect all the rules of good dental health.

It's possible that the supply of water in his residence had high fluoride content. He rarely ate sweets. Salt water and tooth powder were probably his tools in keeping his teeth clean.

There are other things one can still do. Requesting for fluoridation of water from the local government can be done.

Cavity prevention is increased when one drinks fluoridated water. Actually, fluoridation is a safe and economical procedure which also seems to help hold the calcium in the bones of older people, thus retarding the onset of osteoporosis which makes the aged so susceptible to fractures.

You and your children should also cut down on sugar, particularly sugar loaded foods between or just after meals. Pies, caramels, and other food with sticky sugar should be avoided.

Formation of cavities begins with the appearance of plaque. The plaque harbors bacteria that produce acid and that's what corrodes the teeth. Dextran, formed from table sugar, is what the bacteria love to feed on.

Research shows that those who eat sugar between meals are more prone to developing cavities. Pacifiers containing syrup are being given to babies in recent years. You might be more convinced if you are aware of a particular medical curiosity.

A disease known as hereditary fructose intolerance is known to attack families. These people, after consuming fructose, become uncontrollably sick. The victims early on already refrain from eating food with sucrose. Although they eat food containing much carbohydrates, cavities is hardly a problem for them.

Eating sugar is clearly the reason for the presence of cavities. Remember, too, that the mouth particularly gums and teeth are sensitive to your nutritional state, in general.

Your dental health and tooth formation will be improved as long as you take your vitamins and minerals. The stimulation of your gums is one of the benefits of eating harder foods.

Finally, it becomes obvious from all this why you must brush your teeth after meals, have half yearly checkups and go to your dentist so he can remove plaque and repair defects in the enamel and dentine before the decay reaches the pulp. Or else, you might have to endure big costs and extreme pains.
