At leading duty free stores, you will find all the major tobacco and cigarette brands, such as Rothmans, Benson and Hedges, Marlboro and more. These brands not only represent the best products available in their respective categories, but a sense of pride and history as mentioned below.

Originally, Rothmans International was a British company, producing high end brands such as Rothmans and Dunhill. The company was founded in 1890 by Louis Rothman, operating out of a small kiosk on the busy streets of London. In response to growing business, a small showroom was established in Pall Mall, the birthplace of the well known brand Pall Mall. The reputation of quality was such that Rothmans received a royal warrant from King Edward VII. A royal warrant of appointment was issued to those who supplied goods or services to the royal family, and permits those to advertise the fact. The company was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1929, where its business continued to thrive before being acquired in 1998 by British American Tobacco, where it continues to produce the highest quality of cigarettes.

Another brand which is surmountable to quality is that of Benson and Hedges. Founded by Richard Benson and William Hedges in 1873, its prime purpose was to supply a premium tobacco product for Albert Edward, the Prince of Wales at the time. Similar to the history of Rothmans, Benson and Hedges also acquired a royal warrant in 1878. However, this was revoked in 1999 with the reasoning that the royal household did not demand enough of the product in modern times to warrant such an award. Popularity of the brand grew which contributed to the expansion of operations to Canada and the United States in the early 1900's. Between 1928 and 1960 saw the ownership of the North American subsidiaries being purchased by Phillip Morris, while the UK operation was purchased in 1955 by the Gallagher Group. Although still operating today, the company has now become a subsidiary of Japan Tobacco, a, merger which occurred in 2007. Born from the original ingredients in 1873, Benson and Hedges still produces it 'Special Filter' edition, renowned throughout the world, with the recent addition of rolling tobacco to cater for the various niches of the tobacco market.

When embarking on an overseas adventure, friends & family often inundate you with requests for duty free cigarettes and that is because duty free retailers still offer the best value in tobacco products and leading brand cigarettes, such as those mentioned above. As duty and tax impositions on tobacco products are often some of the highest, duty free represents real value.

However, with such value for money on demand, it is easy to get carried away and purchase too many cartons or pouches. Care should be taken in ascertaining the limits on tobacco products; otherwise you may have them confiscated or be charged duty and tax for any products exceeding the limits. On entering New Zealand, you are permitted to carry either 200 cigarettes, 250 grams of tobacco or 50 cigars (or a combination of all three not exceeding 250 grams).

You can see that with the availability of duty free cigarettes nowadays, the purchase of tobacco has come a long way!
