Leading duty free stores provide an excellent choice for those individuals travelling internationally. Duty free alcohol represents great value and all of the major styles and brands are available. However, those travelling to New Zealand are spoilt for choice with the large range of world class and award winning wines; whether they are for enjoying throughout your Kiwi experience, or taking a small stock home to impress your friends with.

New Zealand is characterised with a unique temperate climate, pristine sources of water and soil types that are conducive to growing a vast array of world class wines. New Zealand possesses a diverse range of landscapes, from vast mountain ranges in the South Island to sub-tropical beaches in the north. As a result, the wine growing regions span across a variety of climates and soil types, producing a various collection of styles. The majority of New Zealand's wineries are located in coastal areas, which experience their own unique micro-climate characterised by humid day time temperatures and gentle cool night winds.

The origins of wine in New Zealand dates back to the 1830's, when British oenologist James Busby became the country's first wine producer. The first vineyard was established in Waitangi, however it took some time before the beverage became accepted in the country. Due to the small amounts of grapes being grown, it wasn't until the late 1970's that the wine industry experienced a boom due to the recognition of sublime growing conditions and the increased exposure to overseas wineries and expert wine making as a result of transportation technologies. From that point, there was no holding back. From the modest beginnings in the late 1970's, New Zealand has consistently produced top class wines that are desired globally.

The 'new world' wine region produces a fine range of reds, including: cabernet sauvignons, merlots and pinot noirs, as well as whites including: chardonnay, rieslings, sparkling and aromatic varieties. Nonetheless, the jewel in the crown for New Zealand wine is the sauvignon blanc, which it rates throughout the world as the benchmark for this style. It enjoys exuberant and pungent flavours characterised with notes of gooseberries, passionfruit and lime.

Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand can be divided into two regional styles. The northern, which are predominantly produced in the Hawkes Bay region, tend to be richer and riper, with melon, nectarine and other stone fruit flavours. In contrast, the southern sauvignon blanc is characterised with notes of passionfruit, gooseberry and herbal undertones, producing a lighter and crisper wine.
