Though Seattle is most famous for its influence on the grunge scene, its sports teams and being the home of corporations like Microsoft and Starbucks, one of Seattle's most famous residents was martial arts legend Bruce Lee.

Despite being dead for over thirty years the name Bruce Lee remains synonymous with perfection in martial arts. While the great martial artist may have gotten it "right," is his message lost by those who succeeded him?

After the Civil War, when Robert E. Lee was president at Washington University (later renamed to Washington and Lee University), Lee's favorite old war-horse Traveller was still with him. When Lee died, the horse Traveller walked behind Lee's hearse in the funeral procession.

Their efforts, though met serious obstacles. Few Blacks had the financial resources to utilize these professionals and fewer Whites were interested in their services.

After moving to the United States to escape the dangers of frequent street fights in Hong Kong, Bruce soon began studying drama at the University of Washington. In the mid 1960's he developed "the style of no style" that he called Jeet Kune Do or the "Way of the Intercepting Fist."

The idea now prevalent among some defense officials that formal classroom-based education is either expendable or unnecessary flies in the face of millennia of historical precedent. Brilliant strategists and military leaders not only tend to have had excellent educations, but most acknowledge the value and influence of their mentors.
