subject: Sclerotherapy Is The Ideal Treatment For Blood Vessel Malformations [print this page]

Sclerotherapy is a treatment used for treating blood vessels or blood vessel malformations. The medicine is injected to shrink the blood vessels. In adults, this treatment is used for varicose veins and hemorrhoids. In children and young adults, it is used with vascular or lymphatic malformations. Sclerotherapy is an option to treat varicose veins, other than surgery and laser ablation. In this procedure a variety of sclerotherapy solutions (sclerosants) are injected directly into the varicose veins. The injecting of the solution can irritate the vessel irreversibly damaging the vessel from inside, resulting in shutting down the targeted vessel. Over the period of time, the vessel turns into scars which fade away. Sometimes vessels do not completely shut down after a single treatment with sclerotherapy. Sometimes several treatment sessions would be required to completely treat a vein, depending on the size and location of the veins. A typical sclerotherapy session takes from 30 to 60 minutes.

This procedure is best for patients with varicose veins. Most patients experience 70-90 reduction in varicose and spider veins with sclerotherapy over several sessions. Less than 10 percent of the people who have sclerotherapy on their varicose veins do not respond to the injections at all. In these cases a different solution or a combination of treatments including laser vein treatments often is successful. In cases where all of the above measures fail, the cause may be an unrecognized and untreated feeder veins or reflux vein disease. Feeder veins are larger, but slightly deeper located superficial veins that feed surface spider vein networks, whereas reflux vein disease refers an abnormal communication with the deep vein system allowing reverse flow from the deep vein system into superficial veins.

Spider veins typically respond quickly to sclerotherapy treatments and the results can be seen as early as three to six weeks, depending on the vein size and density. Larger veins or clusters of smaller veins take longer, i.e. they respond in three to four months. The side effects of sclerotherapy are tolerable and temporary. Patient might experience itching, tenderness, skin bruising and redness at the injected area.
