If you are considering traveling to the eastern tip of the United States, be sure to set aside time on your itinerary to visit the small town in Maine called Ogunquit. This popular summer resort has a the motto: Beautiful Place by the Sea for some very obvious reasons.

The name Ogunquit means 'coastal lagoon to the native Abenaki Indians who settled the area back in the 1600s. Shipbuilding took place back then along the Ogunquit River as many schooners and brigs were built near what was called Fish Cove.

Today, Ogunquit is a vibrant seasonal resort town that brings visitors from both nearby and from afar and in fairly great great numbers. During the past century, Ogunquit has been a very popular gay and lesbian getaway and today the town features many gay-owned and operated hotels, bars, restaurants and theaters. Most of the gay businesses are in the Village section of the town.

You can take advantage of one of hotels in Maine when you are visiting the area. There are numerous hotels and motels both in and nearby the town. With its white sandy beaches, rugged and picturesque coastline, historic village filled with quaint shops, restaurants and galleries, Ogunquit is one of the prettiest vacation spots in all of New England.

If you prefer to have something that is moderately priced, then select from one of the numerous Ogunquit motels. There are several motels that are close to beaches, shops and restaurants and some are set back away from the hustle and bustle for added peace and quiet.

The state of Maine is proud of the Ogunquit area and welcomes tourists to explore the state in its entirety. Maine boasts miles and miles of rocky coastline, low rolling mountains and heavily forested landscape. You can choose from the hundreds of Maine hotels along the coastal drive and be sure to make several stops along the way to sample Maine's seafood cuisine-especially lobsters and clams. Maine is a natural tourist attraction and has visitors coming from all over the world during the summer months. This state is especially beautiful in autumn as the trees begin to transform into a living canvas of reds, burnt oranges and rich yellows. The state of Maine experiences a rather humid climate with warm, humid summers. Winters are cold and snowy and can be especially harsh in the northern sections. Maine is considered to be safe from hurricanes and other tropical storms although you can expect a few thunderstorms to move through the state during spring and summer.
