subject: What Does Stat Shipping Mean? [print this page]

In all types of courier industries, there is always one service which means to move the goods as fast as possible, no matter what. If you're used to working with San Francisco courier services that provide business courier service, you might be used to seeing this called something like emergency courier service. If instead you're working with any kind of a medical courier company, you might instead see the service referred to as STAT service.

STAT service is the absolute fastest type of delivery service that you can get in the medical industry. There is nothing that is faster. The reason that they call this a STAT service is because in hospitals and throughout the health care industry, that is what the term means. When someone requests something STAT it means that it must be done with all possible haste, and takes priority over all non-stat requests.

This is a term that, like many in the medical industry, comes from a Latin root word. The original word that STAT is derived from is 'statim'. In the original Latin, this essentially means immediately. That is why this is the term that doctors and other health care providers have chosen to mean to get something done as fast as possible.

STAT shipping is done by medical couriers to carry all types of time critical medical deliveries to their destinations using every vehicle type that they may have at their disposal. STAT deliveries are not limited by vehicle type, and couriers will use all ground vehicle, airlines, and often helicopters to make the deliveries. Because STAT deliveries are of an urgent nature, there can even be patient lives that depend on the speed of deliveries, so no resources or expenses are spared.

In fact, helicopters are probably used more frequently to make medical STAT deliveries than they are in any other facet of the courier industry. The helicopter has a lot of unique advantages which make it perfect for this type of delivery. They aren't tied to schedules like regular airlines are, yet can travel much faster than ground vehicles. They can also take off and land at many more locations. They're used so often in the medical industry that some hospitals have landing facilities on site, making them the perfect vehicle for delivering a critically important shipment which might consist of pharmaceuticals, blood, tissue samples, or possibly even an organ which is going towards a transplant surgery.
