Financial Waters: Bad Credit Boat Loans

For those who live in coastal areas, island areas, or areas prone to frequent flooding, a boat can be a quite a tool. Whether as a means for transport, a business asset, or even a home, boats can be versatile and helpful tools. Unfortunately for those not privileged to be part of the upper class, boats are also expensive. Equally difficult for many is getting a loan to finance the acquisition of a boat, because of a troubled credit history or a lack of quantifiable finances. Fortunately, however, there is a way around this latter difficulty, and that is a bad credit boat loan.

A bad credit boat loan is no different from any other type of bad credit loan, save perhaps in its amount. A boat is a significant financial investment, and comes with a host of secondary costs, such as equipment and berthing fees, as well as the license to pilot such a craft. Bad credit boat loans, therefore, are generally large, unsecured loans, given by smaller creditors. Some locations, such as California and Florida, have creditors that specialize in bad credit boat loans, and can extend more favorable terms than those creditors who handle all types of bad credit loans.

Whatever the creditor, the borrower must be conscious of the fact that the loan is unsecured, meaning that the creditors will not seize the boat if the loan is defaulted on. Instead, the borrower's credit will be wrecked and he or she may find themselves in a very bad financial situation. The borrower, when taking out the loan, must also be aware of the recurring expenses involved in having a boat, such as how much it costs per month to dock it, how much fuel it will generally go through, and what equipment needs to be bought and maintained, so that these costs can be figured into the amount being borrowed. If careful, though, and in a region where it would be helpful, taking out a bad credit boat loan can be a sound and canny idea.
