subject: Arthritis Pain - Natural Treatments For Arthritis [print this page]

Arthritis pain affects nearly 40 million people in the United States. If you suffer with arthritis, hot chili peppers, chondroitin and glucosomine are your friend.

Arthritis is defined as the inflammation of one or more joints, which causes pain, swelling, stiffness, and limits your movement. This article will examine the natural treatment of two of the most common types of arthritis-osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Natural Treatments For Arthritis

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are not curable but it is possible to greatly reduce pain and suffering from chronic types of arthritis without synthetic drugs. In fact, changing your eating habits, getting more sleep and exercise without synthetic drugs is best for osteoarthritis and other forms of joint inflammation. Only use synthetic drugs after making natural changes to eating habits, exercise and rest, if absolutely necessary.

Exercise is extremely important to maintain healthy joints. It can reduce pain, alleviate stiff joints, and enhance muscle and bone strength. Here are three types of exercises that are commonly recommended

* Range of motion exercises for flexibility

* Low-impact aerobic activity

* Strength training for muscle tone

Surprisingly, rest is just as important as exercise when dealing with arthritis. You should get 8 to 10 hours of sleep per night and take naps during the day (if possible) to help recover from "flare-ups" faster. Rest could even help prevent worsening pain. Along those lines you should also:

* Reduce stress, which can aggravate your symptoms. Try meditation, guided imagery or even yoga.

* Avoid positions or movements that place extra stress on your affected joints.

* Avoid holding one position for too long.

Here are some other natural remedies you can try:

* Change your diet to include vitamins and minerals, especially antioxidants like vitamin E. Antioxidants are found in fruits and vegetables. Add selenium to your diet from Brewer's yeast, wheat germ, garlic, whole grains, and sunflower seeds. Add omega-3 fatty acids from cold water fish (like salmon, mackerel, and herring), flaxseed, rapeseed (canola) oil, soybeans, soybean oil, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts.

* Use capsaicin cream, which is derived from hot chili peppers. This can be applied to the skin over your painful joints. You may feel improvement after applying the cream for 3-7 days. Capsaicin cream produces a temporary reduction in pain, so it must be used regularly to provide prolonged pain relief.

* Take glucosamine and chondroitin -- these natural supplements form the building blocks of cartilage, the substance that lines joints.

This is what has been most effective for me and it is regarded as safe and with no side effects. These supplements are reasonable in price and many people have seen their symptoms improve dramatically especially when combined with other all-natural ingredients.
