subject: 5 Treatments You Can Get From A Cosmetic Dentist [print this page]

These days we are bombarded with images of perfect looking celebrities and increasingly we feel the need to emulate them. In terms of achieving the perfect celebrity smile, the good news is that there have been significant advances in the field of cosmetic dentistry which allow us to achieve this without harming the bank balance significantly. Here are 5 popular modern cosmetic dentistry treatments:

Teeth whitening - teeth whitening is a popular treatment which does not involve any pain or discomfort. It involves coating the teeth with a special peroxide bleaching gel and shining a laser onto the teeth. The laser reacts with the gel to eliminate the staining particles on the teeth and thus create a whitening effect. Patients are then normally given a home whitening kit which is used for a couple of weeks afterwards to complete the whitening process.

Dental Implants - dental implants are the most modern tooth replacement method available. The treatment involves the drilling of a hole into the jaw bone and the placement of the implants inside this hole. The implant is made of titanium which integrates well with the bone matter in the jaw and therefore provides a solid base to attach a false tooth to.

Dental crowns - dental crowns are a way of hiding damaged or broken teeth. A protective cap is placed over the existing damaged tooth. In the past the material of choice used to be porcelain for aesthetic reasons, however it is not increasingly common practice to use ceramic crowns. Ceramic crowns have the advantage of being stronger as well as even more aesthetically pleasing.

Dental Bridges - dental bridges are so called because they 'bridge' the gap between the two teeth and are a way of replacing missing teeth. A custom made structure is made which incorporates a hollow crown to support a missing tooth and this is attached to the surrounding teeth in order to keep in place. As with dental implants, a false tooth is chosen that blends in with the existing teeth to make it more natural.

Orthodontics - orthodontics is a form of dentistry which is involved with the straightening or moving of teeth in order to improve the appearance of a smile. The way this is usually done is with the use of braces which apply pressure to the teeth and gradually move them into position. Traditionally these braces would be very unsightly and cause embarrassment to the wearer. However there is a new breed of braces which are nearly invisible and much more comfortable. These braces are known as 'invisalign'.
