Weekends Near Chandigarh

There are some good weekend spots near the well known town of Chandigarh.

The famous Chandi Mandir and Mansa devi temples in Panchkula, are just at a distance of 10 kms from Chandigarh. These ancient temples are thronged by the pilgrims all the year round. The Mansa Devi temple is beautifully constructed and has lush green surroundings.

Morni Hills, which is at a distance of 45 kms from Chandigarh is a natural park. This place is major attraction among the adventure seekers as here they can go for rock climbing and trekking activities. One can also see many wild animals here like langur, rhesus monkeys, deer, leopards and peacocks. There are some hotels and also Forest Department rest house for the travelers where one can dwell and enjoy the visit.

Pinjore, the Mughal style Yadavindra Gardens is at a distance of 20 kms from Chandigarh. This place is linked to the Mahabharata and it is believed to be one of the spots where the Pandava rested when they were in exile. Pinjore has 3 palaces which are built in Rajasthani and Mughal styles. There is a beautiful garden with pavilions and fountains. One of the three palaces has been transformed into a hotel by the state tourism department. The tariff of the hotel is quiet reasonable suiting to the pockets of the visitors.

Kurukshetra, the battle field during the war of Mahabharata is at a distance of 90 kms from Chandigarh. It is believed that the battle between the two clans of Kauravas and Pandavas was fought on this land only.

The Chhatbir Zoological Park situated at a distance of 15 kms from Chandigarh is home to large variety of birds, animals and reptiles. Here one can also see a lion safari and the well known Bengal tigers.

The Bhakra Nangal Dam, on Sutlej River which is one of highest dams in the world is just 116 kms away from Chandigarh. It is the main powerhouse which supplies power to the northern power grid.

There are many Sikh shrines and other pilgrim places situated in and near the beautiful city of Chandigarh. Anandpur Sahib being the most important among them. Anandpur Sahib is important as it is one of the 5 seats of religious Takhats of Sikh community.

Fatehgarh Sahib is another well known shrine in Punjab. It is around 40 kms from Chandigarh. This Gurudwara commemorate the martyrdom of younger son of Guru Gobind Singh. There is another Gurudwara named Jyot Swarup and the martyrs were cremated over here.
