Tips For Choosing Your Toddler's Clothes

Other than the pleasure of naming your baby, it's hard to imagine anything more enjoyable than clothing her. Yes, raising kids is hard work and there are plenty of heartaches along the way, but choosing what they wear is one of the bonuses of child-rearing, so enjoy it while they're still little! Here are some quick tips for choosing your child's clothes.

Budget Limits

Unfortunately, most of us need to consider budgeting constraints for our children's wardrobes much as we do for our own. When purchasing a child's clothes, it is not worth putting yourself in the poorhouse: she would look darling even if she were wearing a brown paper sack!

Every person's individual budget is different and you know what your own reasonable limits are. Keep in mind that children outgrow clothing very fast: please splurge on a more expensive outfit or two at a children's boutique if it gives you pleasure but don't go overboard. Of course, if the child has a younger sister, she'll be able to get more wear out of that little slice of exquisiteness so you can probably get away with spending a little more.

Practicality and Durability

When shopping for your child, keep in mind that she is a real little person and not a doll to dress up. Most of the outfits you select should be both practical and durable: she needs to be able to move in them, jump, run, and play. And those outfits need to be tough enough to withstand repeated washings, not to mention all the wear and tear your child will inflict on them.

For everyday use, select comfortable cotton jeans or two-piece outfits with elastic waists (especially for toddlers) and stretchy pull-on shirts. You can dress your child like a doll for special occasions, but for everyday: give her a break and let her be a kid!

Buy for the Season Ahead

Smart parents look for sales and start stocking up on clothes for their kids at least one season ahead. If your child's growth rate is fairly predictable, you can even buy outfits an entire year ahead! Children's clothing styles are pretty constant from year to year, especially for very young children, so buying ahead is always a good option for the budget-conscious or sensible. If you really love buying foreign-made or more high-end clothes from children's boutiques, buying at least a season ahead will really save some serious money.

Choosing children's clothing is one of the joys of parenthood: remember to be sensible about it and always keep your child's comfort in mind.
