Most of these types of fans are powered by electric motors; however other fans have used hydraulic and internal combustion engines as well. The mechanical style of axial fans means that they are suited to relatively large volumes of air.

The simplest and most recognizable example of an axial fan is a ceiling fan, which is often suspended from the centre of a room and powered by a switch on the wall or a hanging cord. The movement of the ceiling fan circulates air around the room, cooling the temperature and stirring up stale air. Also, axial fans are an important component in vehicles because they cool the engine down and prevent it from overheating, which would cause a breakdown.

There are suction fans, which draw air in, as well as blowing fans, which (as the name suggests) blow air out. They are both effective, and different situations call for each. When deciding on an axial fan, first determine whether you want the fan to suck air in or blow it out, and at what capacity. A 24 volt fan will be different than a 12 volt fan, so determine what kind of power you will need for the job and select the appropriate piece of machinery.

When installing fans, it is important to make sure they are mounted correctly. The larger and more powerful the fan is, the more dangerous it can be if improperly installed. Secure the fan with mounting brackets to ensure that it will not move, possibly causing damage to property or injury to you or others.

Axial fans are simple in their essential design, but they are very effective and versatile. They are used in so many ways, from the small to the great and powerful.
