Include Exercise As You Plan Travel Activities For Kids

Planning a relaxing vacation with the kids only to be foiled by over-excited behavior? Plan travel activities for your kids that include vigorous exercise every day. This will help you relax at the end of the day, improve moods and - best of all - wear the kids out so they sleep better.

My kids are extremely active at home - they spend hours playing tennis, swimming or just running around in the backyard. Even though most of our vacations include lots of walking, it still is not enough to wear them out. Consequently, we ended the day exhausted but the kids were bouncing off the walls. By planning some vigorous exercise into each day - we are all in better spirits.

Consciously plan each day to allow for some free play time after lunch or dinner - sometimes both! If there is a swimming pool, consider spending at least an hour a day swimming and playing the pool. Pack park toys that you can take to the local park (or even the resort lawn). Items like pocket kites, flip sticks and sidewalk chalk are fun and easy to fit into a suitcase. If space is limited, try some agility or balance games - jump a crack in the sidewalk, hop on one leg, or play hopscotch.

Select a hotel that allows you to walk as much as possible. Instead of the bus tour, take a walking tour of the destination city. While you might see a little less, you will experience much more. If you are traveling with little kids, consider combining driving to a specific destination with a lot of walking once there. While they might not be physically tired, little legs wear out quickly.

Not used to walking or running with the kids? Protect yourself from stiff sore muscles and prevent injuries by incorporating some light stretching into your morning and evening routines.

Ending a fun vacation day by arguing about bedtime with wide-awake kids can ruin an otherwise great day. Plan some strenuous travel activities for kids to improve moods and wear them out before bedtime.
