UN certified packaging relates to following the norms related to the first United Nations Model Regulations of 1957 on the Transport of Dangerous Goods. This regulation was published to protect the goods as well as the surrounding environment.

Gradually between the 70s and 80s, as demand for UN certified packaging increased, newer regulations were enforced. And as per that, only trained personnel should pack the material into the shipping these containers or packaging. As has been mentioned earlier, this type of packaging must be certified by a national competent authority in accordance with UN standards. Henceforth, they would be fit to carry all kinds of dangerous goods.

Also known as Hazmat packaging (hazard materials packaging), the material used in these packages are such that you can ship potentially hazardous or dangerous goods to just anywhere across the world using any mode of transportation. Corresponding to this term the containers are known as Hazmat boxes. They come in convoluted urethane foam for the protection of fragile products shipped within a corrugated box and play a great role in the transportation of dangerous goods correctly.

If you deal in transportation and handling of hazardous materials it is recommended that you use certified UN packaging boxes or containers. Always go for vendors that have sufficient packaging experience in design, testing and customization of UN certified packaging. Some vendors sell these products using different names like UN approved packaging, and DOT approved packaging etc.

Among the different UN certified packaging varieties used the variation packaging also known as V packaging is the most in demand. They are generally used when a combination of different inner components is required. This is also applicable when the party responsible for shipping has a variety of products to ship. Usually, these boxes have cushioning materials inserted in the void spaces amongst the different materials. Most of the times the material used are absorbents like vermiculite.

The hazmat boxes are great for shipping lab samples. They are innovative and flexible solution that accepts a variety of inner containers. However, make sure that they are fully tested to UN specifications and the ISTA requirements for a wide range of possible inner containers. And also they should stick to required maximum gross weight of inner packaging and the maximum gross weight of the completed package for overall safety.

It is to be mentioned here that all UN certified packaging have two types of packaging styles namely combination packaging, where one or more types are packaged together inserting cushions in between for appropriate transportation. Single packaging as the name implies contains only one container for example a five gallon steel pail.
