Reducing Your Winter Gas And Electricity Bills

Once the summer weather starts to fade away and the leaves on the trees start falling, it won't be long before the bitter winter weather hits. This can bring with it big gas and electricity bills as we struggle to keep our homes warm. However, there are a few methods that we can use to combat Jack Frost in our homes and keep those pesky bills down...

Make Sure to Insulate Drafts

During the winter months it is vital that we retain heat inside our homes and keep cold air out. One way to do this is to locate any drafts - the most likely places where drafts occur is doors and windows - and plug them up with good insulation and draft stoppers. Installing heavy drapes in your home can provide a great form of insulation. Open them during the day to let the sun in to warm your home and shut them at night to ensure the warm air circulates and that cold air does not replace it.

Don't Go Mad with the Thermostat

It can be very appealing in the depths of winter to turn our thermostats right up in an effort to keep warm, but this will simply cause your utility costs to rocket. There are other ways of keeping warm, such as; wearing several layers of clothing, using blankets or throws while sat watching the television, moving about as much as possible, and venturing outside every once in a while - the outside temperatures will make you appreciate your warm home!

Don't Heat Unused Rooms

If your home has rooms which nobody uses, such as guest rooms, it would be wise to turn the radiators off in these rooms and shut the doors. It is a waste of energy and money heating rooms which nobody ever ventures into! This is a time where we all need to tighten our belts and cut costs where we can - ensure you are not throwing money away.

Invest in Energy Efficient Lighting

Of course, it is not simply the cold that causes our utility bills to climb during the winter months - the dark nights mean we spend more on lighting. To keep electricity costs down it may be wise to invest in energy efficient lighting sources. Eco-light-bulbs use much less power than regular light-bulbs, thus they use much less electricity. As well as cutting costs, you are also helping to save the planet!
