The Top Ten Toys Of 2006

Toys, Shopping, department stores, toy manufacturers, favorite toys

We've just passed the midway point of 2006. A survey of leading department stores shows that children age 12 years old and below have diverse tastes and preferences when it comes to their favorite toys. The following are among those that have been frequently mentioned.

1. Garfield and Friends (Volume 5)

Among children aged 5 to 8, the most popular toy is this video collection of episodes from creator Jim Davis' family-favorite cartoon. This is no surprise since Garfield is the most widely syndicated comic strip character in the world. Volume Five is the final volume of the series and includes the entire 1993-1994 seasons.

2. Strawberry Shortcake World of Friends

Another favorite of the 5-to-8 year old set is this delightful video from 20th Century Fox that features Strawberry Shortcake and her new pals from other parts of the world. The videois set in Paris, France and is an effective vehicle for teaching children about the value of friendship.

3. My First Sewing Kit

Among children aged 7 to 12 years old, this kit from toy manufacturers Alex ranks as the most popular for 2006. It comes with virtually everything that a child needs to start learning the fine art of sewing right away, including pre-cut patterns for five quick and easy to follow projects, eight colors of embroidery floss, shapes to make felt animals and a notebook cover, stuffing, fabric, needles, scissors, measuring tape, straight pins, thimble, pin cushion, buttons and a pom-pom strip.

4. Super Embroidery Kit

Another well-loved favorite from Alex is this Super Embroider Kit, especially for those between the ages of 7 and 12. Like the sewing kit, the embroider kit comes with virtually everything your child will need to start the traditional fine art of embroidering right away, including twelve colors of floss, plastic embroidery hoop, scissors, needles, ribbon, sequins, buttons, glass beads, flowers, three felt butterflies, five colors of felt, felt shapes, practice cloth, transfer paper, others supplies, as well as instructions and ideas for embroidery.

5. GeoSafari Talking Globe

Ranking fifth among favorite toys is this well-loved product from the Educational Insights group that teaches children aged 12 and below about geography. The globe is actually an interactive geography quiz game with lights and sound effects to guide and reward your child as they play. One to four players can choose up four different quiz categories (USA/Canada, World, World + USA/Canada).
