Turn an Ordinary Halloween Costume Into Something Spectacular!

Halloween is a big occasion for kids. They want to dress up as their favorite superhero or princess. But do you really want your kids to have the exact same costume as other kids do? Of course not! You want them to have that little something extra that makes their costume unique. Here are a few ideas for making a store bought Halloween costume a step above the rest.

Pump It Up!

If your son is going as a superhero and the costume is a knit jumpsuit, stuff the sleeves with cotton batting or soft paper towels. This will give the costume muscle that your son will love! Consider taking the padding up over the shoulders and a little in the upper chest. You don't want a wimpy Spiderman do you?

You can pump up girl's costumes as well. If your daughter is wearing a princess dress or something similar, add a fluffy slip underneath so the dress really poofs out. After all, really princess dresses don't hang limply! It the dress is tea length, use a tulle slip that is a little longer than the dress. Trim the bottom of the slip with glitter or sparkly ribbon. Your little girl will be the belle of the Halloween ball!

Accessorize!

You can't be a good pirate without a sword, so don't forget the accessories! The little things can really make a difference in a costume - a tiara for a princess, an eye patch for a pirate, etc. You can find accessories that range from elaborate to simple. You can get light up wands and light sabers as well as crazy and fun wigs. You may even have some things around the house that will work - a small basket and a stuffed dog can complete a Dorothy costume!

Remember, you can get carried away with accessories! Make sure your child will still be able to carry their treat bag and that nothing obstructs their vision. Take care that nothing they carry can be used or mistaken for a real weapon. We want to keep our trick or treater's safe!

Make-up Sets The Mood

You can do a lot with simple, everyday makeup. Pick up some outrageous colors of eye shadow and lipstick from clearance bins. You can really transform a face with make-up and kids love it! Little girls like to have pretty eye shadow and lipstick, while boys like to have bruises and cuts.

In addition to using make-up, you can use acrylic craft paint to paint your kid's faces. The paint washes off easily and you can paint their faces with vibrant colors. There are many face painting e-books that give simple face painting tips and patterns.

Yes, Halloween is a fund time for both kids and adults. With a little extra creativity you can turn an ordinary, store bought costume into something extraordinary!
