10 Things That May Put You Off Getting a Dog

Owning a dog can be one of the most emotionally fulfilling things you may do in your life. Dogs are known for their unconditional love and acceptance of their owners. A dog will love you regardless of whether you look good or not. They will love you if you're successful or a failure. These charming animals even love owners who aren't that nice to them.

Owning a dog is not always the proverbial walk in the park though, there are many potential problems you should be aware of before making that lifetime commitment to your future Fido.

1. House Soiling: Dogs can and will sometimes defecate and or urinate in the house. Even the best trained dog will have the occasional accident.

2. Urine Marking: Some dogs, especially unneutered males, mark their territory by urinating. This is a natural thing for a dog to do and can be a hard habit to break.

3. Submissive Urination: Some submissive dogs urinate as a sign of respect and deference to dogs or people they consider dominant. Again, this is normal dog behavior but it won't be appreciated when it happens in the house!

4. Chewing: Dogs (and many animals) like to explore their environment with their mouths. Chewing is enjoyable to dogs but not so for you if your pup gets hold of your Jimmy Choo and reduces it to a soggy mess.

5. Digging: Digging is another thing dogs love to do. If you pride yourself on your impeccable rose bushes, maybe a dog isn't the ideal pet for you.

6. Aggression: A dog can become aggressive for a wide number of reasons. Some dogs become so aggressive that their owners may fear them. Aggression must be addressed immediately so it doesn't grow out of control.

7. Barking: We talk, dogs bark, it's how they vocalize! But when it becomes excessive, it can be extremely frustrating. Dogs will bark excessively for many reasons such as loneliness, boredom, attention seeking or guarding. Understanding the cause will help you in eliminating it.

8. Jumping on Furniture: While many owners allow their dogs free access to their bed and sofa, not all dog owners are as tolerant, especially when Fido has just come in from a walk in the mud.

9. Aggression Towards Other Dogs: So you dreamed of idyllic walks with your dog and trips to the doggie park to socialize with fellow dog lovers but Fido has other ideas, he wants to attack and kill other dogs. An aggressive dog is not only a nightmare to go out with, it can be embarrassing too. Dog aggression like general aggression must be analyzed and corrected as soon as possible before it gets out of hand.

10. Coprophagy: Perhaps the most common reason for a dog owner to fall out of love with their pet is stool eating. Stool eating is a persistent and difficult habit to break once your dog starts doing it. Prevention is certainly better than the cure in this case.
