West Palm Beach is weekend boaters' dream destination, says Yellow Cab Service Corporation's Cullan Meathe

Weekend boaters will find West Palm Beach a perfect destination, says executive Cullan Meathe, Yellow Cab Service Corporation of Florida, who docks his boat there several times a year. The city of West Palm Beach is notable for its palm tree-lined streets, delightful waterfront views, shopping districts, historic neighborhoods, outdoor festivals and plenty to do on shore or off.

Palm Beach County is renowned for its coastal and intracoastal waterways, world-class beaches and fishing. Boating and fishing aficionados will want to take advantage of the Annual Palm Beach International Boat Show and the Florida Sportsman Fishing & Boat Show. Sports fishing, scuba diving and jet skis are popular pastimes and out-of-towners can readily hire equipment and professionals to help make these outings successful, enjoyable and memorable. Because the Gulf Stream is nearby, fishermen travel here looking for a great catch. There are many supply and tackle businesses, boat sales and rentals in this area, as well as numerous safe boating courses and several fishing competitions.

Meathe explains that West Palm Beach has a wide variety of on-land activities that will appeal to weekend boaters, including the Palm Beach Zoo at Dreher Park with its fascinating Mayan exhibit and Amazon Marketplace, as well as its large collection of live animals. Mounts Botanical Garden features tropical and sub-tropical plants from six continents, a maze to wander through and hundreds of butterflies flying around. Antique Row with its more than 40 quality antique, home furnishings, fabric and specialty shops and art galleries is a delightful place to spend an afternoon browsing. Another interesting spot to visit is the South Florida Science Museum.

West Palm Beach has a rich cultural scene, with the theater and the performing arts well represented in this area. The Raymond F. Kravitz Center for the Performing Arts offers premier entertainment. The Norton Museum of Art houses a valuable collection of European, American, Chinese and contemporary art. Ballet, opera and symphony orchestra are favorites of residents and visitors to West Palm Beach. SunFest, Florida's largest waterfront music and art festival takes place each May.

The Downtown Retail and Entertainment District is alive with fashionable martini bars, trendy nightclubs, classy boutiques and many fine restaurants. With lots of pubs, restaurants, coffee houses and dance clubs, West Palm Beach has much to offer in the way of nightlife. CityPlace is an exciting shopping, dining and entertainment destination, with more than 100 shops and restaurants and regular outdoor entertainment on the Plaza. Its cultural centerpiece is the Harriet Himmel Theater.

Other West Palm Beach on-shore activities include many equestrian events from dressage, show jumping trail riding and polo, to fox hunting, rodeos, thoroughbred racing and harness racing. A different type of four-legged friend is featured at the Pam Beach County Dog Fanciers Association annual dog shows.

After a weekend spent exploring all that West Palm Beach has to offer, pull up anchor and get underway for more adventures.

Happy sailing.
