Potty Training Kids - Always A Joy And A Challenge

We have four children, three of which are potty trained. The youngest has only a year old, so we're cutting him some slack. Potty training the other three kids was an individual experience with each child.

Our firstborn was not cooperative for any of the usual potty training drills. He didn't want to practice and didn't want to use a training potty. He was the same way when it came to weening him from breast milk; he wouldn't eat baby food and wanted whatever it was we had on our plates. No intermediate steps for him, just straight to "grown-up" way of doing things. In the end, he started wanting to use the potty just as soon as he was tall enough to get on the toilet himself. It was a bit frustrating, because he was in diapers a little longer than we wanted, but when he was ready, he was ready and there was no looking back.

Our next child was different in that she wanted to do anything that her older brother was doing. There is about a two-year age difference between them, so as soon as he was using the potty, she wanted to try it as well. She was still a little too small, so we encouraged her to wait and try other training methods, but not being one to be bested, she managed to climb up on the potty anyway and was ready to use it full time in short order. By the time we had our third child, we had two children almost entirely out of diapers, and neither child has had a problem with bed wetting or having accidents out of the ordinary.

Our third child, also a little girl, more or less decided one day that it was time to use the potty. She was still little when our forth child was born, and as such went through the not uncommon process of reversion. She started baby talking more, wanted to be held, and exhibited other behaviors in order to validate her accustomed spot in our family. Once she felt secure that the new baby wasn't replacing her in our affections, she started back on track again, and moved quickly from diapers to pull-ups. My wife and I talked to her about the wonders of panties, and it became clear to her that her older sister was a "big girl" because she used the toilet. One day, she said she wanted panties, and so we made a special trip to pick some out. She transitioned to panties almost overnight, and with the exception of a few random accidents in the daytime, has never wet herself at night.
Potty Training Kids - Always A Joy And A Challenge

Who knows what challenges our youngest will bring? In any case, we have several systems in place for potty training kids and will be ready for him when he is ready for us.
