Five ways you can help your child get fit

1. Turn off the computer and television - One of the biggest reasons our youngsters aren't getting enough exercise or outdoor play time is because they're too busy surfing the net and staring at the TV. As well casually introducing new rules about how much time they spend doing either of these things, change your own lifestyle by avoiding too much TV or computer time. If you sit idly and stare at a screen, so will they. Get fit together!

2. Take them to a gym - It may surprise you to know that some gyms are set up for families as well as adults, with many activities designed to help children get healthier without it feeling like a chore. Find a fitness centres near you and take your children along to see what it's like.

3. Encourage them to walk to school - It's simple, but it's also effective. If they're too young to make their own way, then walk down with them. Or, if they're a little older, encourage them to walk to school with a few friends. It may just be 10 or 15 minutes of extra physical activity for each journey, but over the course of the week, we're talking about hours of exercise.

4. Introduce them to new foods - If they eat healthier, in particular with more fresh fruit and vegetables, then children will find they have even more energy. If you only feed them quick-to-make comfort food, they're likely to wind up feeling lethargic and lazy.

5. Introduce them to new sports - Not all children like football or netball, but that doesn't mean they can't enjoy sporting activity. There are numerous sports and activities out there - including rugby, ballet, martial arts, hockey and dancing - which are fantastic exercise and fun to do. Don't pressure your child, but at least make sure they know there are more options than what they're given at school.

Start by finding out more about where to find a children's gym in your city or town and go along for a look.
