subject: Nail Fungus Treatment - More Than You Ever Wanted To understand About Nail Fungus [print this page]

Nail fungus is something that is not exactly pleasant to talk about, but something that many of us have suffered through. You look down one day and see this gross looking nail on your big toe and the horror starts to sink in. Of course, nail fungus always seems to happen just as beach season arrives and flip flop weather is finally here.

The bright side of this little horror story is that the condition can be treated fairly quickly and will go away. However, it can come back if you continue to put that toe into risky situations. In order to beat it, you must understand it so that it can be treated and avoided in the future.

Symptoms - more than likely, you are already familiar with many of the symptoms of this condition. The nail becomes extremely thick; it will be very ragged or crumbly, is often distorted and will have a darker color. In other words, it is nothing that you want to look at anytime soon.

Causes - something known as dermatophytes are usually responsible, there are also a few odd other culprits that can bring this condition upon you. This wonderful little fungus does not need much to survive. It will often grab a hold of a host in a public shower, such as your local gym, or on a pool deck when you are splashing around in that stagnant water puddle that has been there for hours.

Risk Factors - the funny part about the risk factors is that in many cases, they are situation that we totally control. Working in boots on hot days with thick socks, excessive foot sweating, and the pool deck that we mentioned above. All of these things have those little dermatophytes licking their chops and looking for a new host.

Medical Treatments - in most cases, an over-the-counter treatment will do the trick. However, people that have diabetes or certain other medical problems may require oral medication from their doctor. As with anything, it is always best to talk it over with your physician and let them make the call before pursuing treatment on your own.

Home Remedies - we recommend the doctor and yet you continue to read home remedies! Because we know that most people will never head to the doctor's office and don't even want to go to the drugstore, we have two items that are probably in the home that may just work. Vicks VapoRub and white vinegar are all over the Internet as home remedies. This is nothing that your doctor will recommend, but it won't hurt to try them.

Nail fungus is not something we like to talk about, but you are reading this so it is probably affecting you or someone you know. By understanding the condition, you can get it treated and hopefully avoid getting it again. One look down at that ugly toenail should be all the incentive that you need to make sure it never happens again.
