Why Retailers Seem To Love Holiday Lighting So Much

Most of us know that the holiday season is upon us when we start seeing holiday lighting coming up at retail stores. In almost every part of the world where these lights are used, retailers will tend to be amongst the first people to install them, even when Christmas is weeks away.

Homeowners catch up, and soon, the lights are everywhere. But the retailers set the trend ? year after year. Clearly, then, the retailers do love the lights, and it seems as if they are always watching their calendars, waiting for a time when they can suitably install the lights. We are trying to understand why they retailers love holiday lighting so much.

To get started on the path towards understanding why retailers seem to love the lights that are installed to celebrate the advent of the holiday season, we have to appreciate what the holiday season means for retailers. This is where it emerges that the holiday season, year after year, means greatly enhanced sales (and profits) for retailers. Talk to any retailer, and they will probably tell you that the holiday season is one in which they record very high sales. The high sales translate into higher profits, especially given the fact that in many parts of the world, the retailers get the opportunity to hike their prices slightly in the holiday season. They know that people, driven by the holiday buzz, will probably not even notice the price differences.

Having understood what the holiday season means for retailers, it is not hard to understand why they love holiday lighting so much. These lights, as we have noted, tend to go a long way towards celebrating the advent of the holiday season. Their sprouting all over the place is what tells people that the holiday season is at hand, and thus puts them in the ?holiday spirit.? Sighting the lights means, to many people, that they have to start shopping for the various things they will need to make their celebrations go well. This, of course, is what the retailers yearn for. The retailers also know that they are likely to make more holiday sales if the people start their holiday shopping early. Clearly then, it is in their best interests to ?alert? the people about the advent of the holiday season early ? which they achieve through, among other things, the holiday lighting we are talking about.

At an individual level, the retailers who install the lights know that they are likely to make more sales than those who don?t install them. After all, the stores with these lights tend to look very bright, and bright shops generally tend to be more inviting to customers than dull shops. Furthermore, it is well established that many people subconsciously imagine that they are only likely to get the stuff they need for their holidays if they go shopping at the stores where lights are installed.

Ultimately then, we can argue that the retailers love the holiday lighting because through them they see the possibility of doing better business.
