Marijuana, heroin and cocaine are the major contemporary drugs that being smuggled. Drug smuggling is dedicated to farming, manufacture, supply and sale of those materials that are subject to drug prohibition laws.

A drug smuggling is the major problem of the entire world that drastically spoiling our society, especially youngsters. About 190 million people from all over the world use at least one drug. According to a study, approximately 1 in 5 people between the age of 16 and 59 said that they have taken at least one of the drugs mentioned. Most jurisdictions disallow drug trading of many types of drugs by drug prohibition laws. The Drug Enforcement Agency, also called DEA, is a national agency in the United States that watches the distribution and consumption of narcotics. The department is also responsible for coordinating and pursuing U.S. drug investigations abroad.

Every prescription for narcotics written in the United States is tracked by the drug enforcement agency. All these information are safely stored in a central database. Because of this reason, each physician or practitioner must be registered with the DEA with a unique DEA registration number, known as DAE Number, which is included on each prescription. If any illegal or wrong samples are detected, such as an abnormally high number of prescriptions for one patient or from one physician, the DEA registration is suspended until the cause is investigated. During this period, prescribing rights are either reinstated or revoked depending on the conclusion of the investigation.

The main focus of DAE is to investigate and prosecute the organizations and their members who are involved in the cultivation, production, smuggling, distribution, or diversion of illegal substances. The agency interrupts these organizations by arresting their members, taking possession of their drugs, and grabbing their assets. It creates, manages, and supports enforcement-related programs to reduce the availability and demands of illegal substances. This effort requires the constant management of a national narcotics intelligence system, the results of which are shared with national, state, and local law enforcement authorities.
