Skipping For Weight Loss

Skipping can be a fun, simple and low maintenance way to lose weight. All that is required to skip is a bit of space, a good pair of sneakers as well as a skipping rope. The exercise burns a lot of calories, will help you build muscle (which enhances your metabolism), increases stamina and even improves your coordination. The exercise is a terrific way to strengthen both your upper and lower body. A ten minute skipping session burns up about 70 to 110 calories depending on your weight and how vigorously you workout, making this a powerful way to lose weight. Skipping isn't just for those who don't have time to visit the gym. Professional athletes claim it is great as a method to shape up.

Skipping safely

Begin by stretching your calves and knees first to lessen your risk of injury or strain. Limber up first by jogging on the spot for a couple minutes as this can help you skip more comfortably and keep going for longer. Start skipping and jump once the rope hits the ground. You don't need to jump very high, an inch off the floor is okay. Skipping puts lots of impact on the knees so you shouldn't jump too high. People with joint pain or aches might want to avoid this exercise.

Skipping is a strenuous sport which means you should take it slow when you're just beginning. Start by doing 15 to 30 second sessions (it does not seem like much but skipping is surprisingly tiring) and walk round the room for a couple minutes during intervals. With time you can raise the period of time you skip. Try and skip 3 to 4 times weekly. Ensure you allow yourself rest days to prevent putting excessive strain on your joints. You'll soon find skipping a wonderful way to tone your muscles and drop weight quickly. You can also bring your skip rope to work and skip during short breaks.

What you will need

An electronic skipping rope is best as it will help you keep an eye on the number of skips you have done and you'll be more alert to improvements in your stamina over time. Otherwise an ordinary skipping rope will work (you can purchase one for less than $ 15). You will need to find a place big enough so that the swing of the rope doesn't accidentally knock anything over. Typically a four by six foot area will be required and a minimum of ten inches of space above the head.

Be sure you're skipping rope is of sufficient length for your height. Some ropes are extendable so you should check prior to making a purchase. You will also need a pair of aerobic shoes. Ones with a decent cushioning layer are best because they will be least harmful on your joints. Skipping on a wooden floor or an exercise impact mat is most beneficial as it has less impact than trying to skip on concrete, asphalt or grass.
