subject: How To Choose A Primary School For Children [print this page]

Schools are called the foundation pillars of society. In-fact, schools are more like workshops where human beings are molded in terms of our character, thought structure and way of looking at things. Thus to make a decision about the kids schools sometimes becomes a tough job for the parents. As parents we all want to give our children the care of the best educational institution. A childs experience during the formative years in school has a profound impact on the skills, attitude and abilities of the child later on in life. It wont be wrong if one says that choosing a school, to some extent, is like choosing the person the child will become. It is no wonder, then, that selecting a primary school is a decision fraught with anxiety for many parents. The first and foremost step while choosing a school is to give yourself time to research well before choosing a school. Parents need to collect enough information about the school in terms of the teaching aids used, the school curriculum, academic standard, and the infrastructure.

The standard of a school cant be measured in terms of a school building alone. It is the school reputation, environment and the educational standards that are equally important for the childs holistic development. It pays to remember that whatever school we choose, or limit our options to, our decisions are due to the feasibility of finances, convenience or locality and the greatest influence on the final outcome will be on the home and family. Parents should not be stressed with regard to their financial status. This stress in turn can make children feel pressurized. The proximity of the school from the home is another thing that parents must consider before admitting their children. If the school is at a distance from the home, it may make the children feel tired. Other factors such as religion, discipline or diversity may be a key factor in your decision. Parents need to visit the school once before deciding about their childs future. The schools environment does play a vital role in a childs life. It is not that expensive infrastructure is needed in a childs development. When children get a free and supportive environment in school, they also feel inclined towards their studies.

Parents must also consider whether the school has an emergency plan or a policy with regard to guns, knives, and other hazardous items and especially toward bullying. It is also important for parents to know whether the school has rules to combat bullying. Likewise does the school have a strong focus on literacy and the learning of a second language? Parents can find out how well the school addresses core subjects and skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics by looking at the curriculum, visiting classes, and reading the school's report card. Choosing a school is a major decision which should involve the child in the decision making process. In all, the expectation and educational goals of the child should match the affordability and feasibility of the parents in-order to take a balanced decision.
