subject: Dangers Of Driving Without Uninsured Motorist Coverage In Florida [print this page]

Approximately one in seven drivers in the United States does not have auto insurance. And with the economy continuing to trend downward, even more people are cutting costs by not purchasing auto insurance. In fact, the state of Florida is among the highest states with uninsured motorists.

Problem is, Florida doesnt require you to carry uninsured / uninsured motorist coverage, unlike New York and Maryland. That means if youre injured in an auto accident by an uninsured motorist, you may be forced to cover the cost of treating injuries sustained in your accident, unless youve elected to purchase uninsured motorist coverage.

A common misunderstanding, especially in the state of Florida, is that people assume because they have full automobile coverage, they have uninsured motorist coverage. This is not the case, however. It is an add-on and therefore, it is something you must elect to purchase.

Uninsured motorist coverage can be a relatively cheap add-on to most insurance policies (somewhere around $150 total) especially when you consider it can recover lost wages, pay for medical bills, and pay for additional expenditures you encounter. Additional expenditures include a rental car to get you by until your car is repaired, and gas to get you to and from treatment.

Heres an example of what could happen to you, or anyone you know.

Youre out driving. Perhaps its to pick up your children from soccer practice. Or maybe youre dropping off a friend at the airport. Traffic up ahead comes to a screeching halt. You slam on the brakes. The person behind you, however, doesnt react as quickly as you do. He slams into the back of your vehicle. All a sudden panic.

You sustained a concussion. In the following days, your neck hurts. Your back aches. And it doesnt get better on its own.

Unfortunately the panic continues when you talk to your insurance company and realize you have to foot the bill for those expenses. And then its too late. If you sustain a long-term disability that prevents or limits your ability to work for the rest of your life, what will you do?

Dont let this be you. Dont drive uninsured or underinsured, especially in the state of Florida, a state that does not require it. Elect uninsured motorist coverage whenever possible, and if you are involved in an automobile accident, contact a personal injury attorney with experience in handling car accident injuries.
