subject: What Questions To Ask When Purchasing Insurance For Your Motorbike [print this page]

As you think about getting a motorcycle you also need to think about motor bike insurance. Motorbike insurance is important and many people do not even think to look at the prices of the insurance before they invest in their new toy. Before you do anything you need to make sure that you ask plenty of questions about coverage for your personal needs and what kind of rates are available that are affordable as well having good coverage.

Sometimes people who have received many traffic tickets or other charges against them will have to pay higher rate. Your insurance agent will be able to check their computer if there are any past or current traffic violations as well as how many accidents you have encountered. This will determine how much your premiums will cost you. Of course, if you have a good record, you will have a lower premium as opposed to someone who has had many traffic violations, etc.

Another thing that you need to ask your insurance agent is what type of motorbike insurance you need. Most states by law require a minimum amount of coverage. Some people will be able to get away with just liability coverage. This is especially fine for people who are careful drivers or who don't plan on being on the road a lot. Basically, this insurance will cover bodily injury and property damage in the case that you would cause either of these to other people that were in the accident. Your motorcycle is not going to be covered however. Sometimes liability comes with what is called guest passenger liability and this means that you will be protected in the case that the passenger on your bike was injured. Not every policy is going to offer this so you need to make sure to ask if the one that you are looking at does in fact have this written in it.

Collision coverage is what most people have since it will pay for damages to your motorcycle in the case that you are involved in an accident. Your insurance company will pay for the damages but if you have a deductible you will have to pay that before they pay anything. Some companies will even allow your deductible to go lower because you have had a good driving record while you are insured with them. Whenever you have comprehensive coverage you have got it all. You do not have to worry if there is a collision, damage or other problem such as fire, hail, tornado, theft or vandalism. These usually have a deductible as well and you only get the money up to the book value of your vehicle.

You need to make sure that you ask how much each of these policies is going to cost you. The more coverage that you get the more expensive your coverage will be. Weighing your risk is extremely important in these situations and you need to make sure that you get the best affordable policy that fits your personal needs.
