Family history of depression triggers depression among school-aged children as stated in the longitudinal study conducted by Dr. Luby and her colleagues.

Chidhood depression can be rooted from genetics, depressed mother and as well from stressful or traumatic events.

The symptoms of depression in pre-schoolers were usually taken for granted and remained untreated believing its just a normal emotional psychological change while growing up. Jennifer Gibson, a brain blogger, wrote about how young is too young being diagnosed and stated that any parent can attest that the terrible 2s as observed from the said children are their being moody and temperamental during their toddler stage.

Gibson also mentioned in her article that a new study funded by the United States National Institute of Mental Health and published in Archives of General Psychiatry showed evidence that depression in preschool-aged children can be a chronic condition and should be given out most attention by the parents.

However, despite the investigation, no evidence has shown that depressed pre-schoolers show developmental delays and that treating depression among young children could be controversial, though there were already increasing number of young children being prescribed powerful psychiatric medications.

Many antidepressant medications such as Zoloft contain warnings for adolescent considering the said drug had not been carefully examined as prescription for pre-schoolers and that most experts support psychotherapy as a first-line treatment in children.

Nevertheless, there is a need for parents, teachers, and caregivers to be educated about a childs emotional development.

The early intervention can prevent depression among children and they will not experience the several side effects of Zoloft which can cause Zoloft birth defects in women.
