subject: Online Backups - Why You Need Them [print this page]

Online data storage has always been one of the major benefits of the internet. In contrast with traditional offline data backups, online backups also have its pros and cons. This however, does not overshadow the fact that an online backup is also a necessity rather than a luxury. Online backups do provide users an advantage over its offline counterparts. As to why this is so, is shown below;

1. The data is secure at times of natural disasters. Being able to access your files virtually through a high speed internet has always been the catch of online storage. At times like these, conventional storage devices along with your work have a high chance of getting damaged or destroyed. With online storage, you can readily access your files once things start to settle down, and you may do so without the fear of data loss.

2. You are protected from data theft. Most people store their online passwords and credit card information in a file on some storage device for reference. In this age of digital information, data robbery is not really a rare case, and having to store such sensitive information on conventional storage devices are very risky. You may argue that in online storage services, the information you send is exposed to the internet, especially during transmission. This is not really the case, as storage providers do have their own method of file encryption. In online storage, you are sure that the only ones able to handle your data are the server and you.

3. Access your files anytime, anywhere. So long you are able to access the web; you can basically access your files, even with a different pc. This is the beauty of online data storage; file access does not require you to always bring your storage device.

4. Longer storage lifetime. And possibly indefinitely. Conventional methods such as CDs and DVDs wear out with time, and with them your files. This is extremely important for files such as images and videos. Preserving your memories with online storage will not only provide security but also lifetime, as offsite storage servers are built to last.

5. Automated file backup. Most online storage providers include programs for automated backing up along with their services. These programs allow their clients to automate file backups on a daily or weekly basis, thus eliminating the need for manual backups. Creating manual backups are sometimes tedious, and most of the time, they are procrastinated as their importance is often overlooked. With file backup automation, you can be always at ease.

6. You are protected from hardware or software glitches. Even if computers today continue to strive for perfection, truth is, in one way or the other glitches do occur. This is often encountered in flash drives and hard disks, and data loss is often the consequence. Having an online backup will ensure that you will never experience these.

Data and information has always been important in this era, and so it is a must that we ensure ours protected. What you have to remember is, life is unpredictable, and anything can happen. And so it is always better to make it a habit to back things up. You will never know when it will be needed, but when the time comes, you will be able to smile it off because you know you are prepared.
