subject: Heady Stuff: Wedding Hair Accessories [print this page]

Marian walked down the echoing aisle with her head held high and a self-satisfied expression crinkling her perfect make-up. She had spent hours preparing herself for this - the wedding of one of her best friends - and she knew that she was turning all the heads. She wasnt sure enough though to keep her gaze pointedly in front of her so she looked around to hear better what people were whispering. Nodding and smiling at friends as she moved towards the front pews she noticed that she wasnt the first of the girls to arrive at the church. Ahead Abbey was leaning over her boyfriend Douglas looking almost coy as she twisted her feathered fascinator through her fingers and smiling so innocently. Just then Abbey looked up and her expression changed to surprise, then annoyance. Just at that moment Marian noticed the same thing. What had happened to the plan? Surely they had all agreed to buy the same wedding hair accessories? Marian was fuming as she walked up to Abbey and hissed sharply Green? Abbey whispered just as sharply back, Purple? How could you?

Marian had a moments doubt as she struggled to remember what was said at the last meeting of the bridesmaids. She remembered how Sally, the bride, had said that traditionally brides wear something purple, something blue, something stolen and somethingno it couldnt have been stolen! Her brow was now truly wrinkled. It had been at the Troubadour Caf. She pictured them all laughing and swigging back red wine. They had all been fitted for their gorgeous, cream, two piece silk suits; long skirts and triple layered jacket hem - so pretty - when Sally had made the suggestion about the outfits. Come on girls, surprise me, you decide what little piece of colour to add to the outfits yourselves.

Sally had then left but the had girls stayed on and it wasnt until just before they went home that someone said Oh, what about fascinators? You know, those little wedding hair accessories that are a piece of lace or flowers or something on a comb?. So they ordered another drink to discuss that and she couldnt remember anything else.

Marian was called out of her reverie by the best man, John, telling them to come out front as Sally would be here soon. There they saw Chloe and Paulette, with not one colour co-ordinated fascinator among them; Paulettes was light blue with touches of peacock blue and Chloes was plum coloured. All of them stared for a moment at the others with tight lips but they couldnt say anything as just then the cream coloured Rolls Royce was pulling up at the curb. Then as her father opened the door for her, Sally stepped out of the Rolls with all the grace and glamour of a Hollywood star but none of the snobbery: Hello girls, She smiled, Oh well done for matching your hair accessories and gloves., then, looking at them all together, I feel like Ill be followed down the aisle by a rainbow. Then the organ began playing and, grinning widely, they all stepped into place behind her.
