Tinnitus Treatment - Simple Ways To Help You

Tinnitus is a condition in which you hear a constant ringing or other sound in the ears that is not really there, and can cause pain and sleepless nights. This condition is not life-threatening, but is irksome and leads some to surgery. Before you do that, look at these three tinnitus treatment methods first.

Checking your health

Your physician will want to assess your overall health first before deciding if your condition can respond to treatment. If he or she can find a cause, then your doctor may have a way to help. The first place a doctor may look is in the ear canal to see if there is build-up of wax which causes a problem.

Then your physician will want to look at your overall vascular health and see if there is an issue there. The last step is very commonly to check your list of medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, as you may need to switch.

Dampening the sound

Getting rid of the sound may not be easy or even possible, but you may be able to dampen the noise using a white noise emitter of some sort. You have a number of ways to go about this method that ranges from special sound generators to more common approaches. Many opt for the nature sounds that some devices can produce to get a nice night of rest.

Others may have hearing aids already, which make treatment somewhat easier. The hearing aids can be turned up and this ironically can help. Others use sound masking tools for tinnitus treatment, and these can be worn in the ear and emit a competing sound. There are also devices which will emit a particular tone of music that will hide the noise of the tinnitus, and the frequency is custom to you.

Drugs

There are a number of drugs that are involved in tinnitus treatment, depending on the case. These will not be for everyone and will not actually cure the condition, but may make the problem seem less intense.

One of the main medications that your physician may look to are the tricyclic anti-depression meds, and there are a few on the market. These can prove to be very effective but are only used in really bad cases, since they bring a host of their own problems such as cardiac problems or constipation.

A common medication that may be more familiar to you is Xanax, or the generic form, alprazolam. This will help you with your ears but may cause you to become tired and nauseous.

One of the last forms of tinnitus treatment is to have surgery done, although you can see there are many other steps and possibilities that you can think over. Ask your doctor for the easier methods and go from there.
