How To Identify Depression Among Children

Depression can be prevented if the child has strong family ties which enable the child to grow up with a healthy and happy disposition, according to research. Parents should still be around their children to address their emotional needs, although there had been a new discovery about a gene that helps one cope with stress and depression.

There are factors considered as causes of depression among children, such as genetics, brain chemistry, stressful life events including the loss of parent, divorce or separation of parents, family conflict or abuse.

There are cases in which depression develops in children when their parents or elders are abusive. The common thread stems from loss of trust and abuse of parental authority, about which some adults who are supposed to protect and nurture their children instead end up being tormentors. They focus on meeting their own needs first and when they are angry they vent their rage on to the young ones, thereby causing depression.

Adults or older adolescents using their positions of authority to take advantage of innocent children and teen are usually the cause of childhood depression.

Abuses can take place when the children are left in the care of abusive step-parents, foster parents, an older friend, or babysitter.

When children are already experiencing depression, they isolate themselves from people and prevent the healthy build-up trust in dependable and caring adults.

Untreated childhood depression increases the dangers of suicidal thoughts and erratic behavior.

Establishing predictability and stability early in life can help get rid of depression among children. Moving homes and school district or shuffling schedules too often should be avoided.

Valuable foundation of love and support as well as with open and honest communicated should be provided by parents.

It is important that parents must have a balanced approach to discipline and letting the kids experience what life is to which parents should always be supporting the childs self-esteem by finding where the child is good at and helping them develop those skills.

However, if children are at risk of depression because of past or present painful circumstances in life, therapy should be considered. A support group in the home or community must be instituted to help them cope, instead of automatically giving them prescribed antidepressant drug such as Zoloft which can cause Zoloft birth defects.
