subject: Use These Skidsteer Attachments To Prepare For Winter [print this page]

Skidsteer attachments combined with an early Fall makes this time of year the perfect time to clear out the scrub and small trees from that parcel of land that has been ignored all year. Why early Fall? Because early Fall soon becomes early Winter, and that is too late. Too late, because it will be too cold, the ground will be too hard, and all of that wood could be in the fireplace or furnace, keeping the homestead toasty and warm.

Taking down the scrub wood in the early Fall has other advantages, too. But figuring out the most simple and efficient way to get the job done is the first step. The hard and miserable way of removing the trees and cutting the wood into usable sections would involve a chainsaw or two, a lot of sweat, poison ivy medication and a couple of weeks time. Simple and efficient seems to always include a skidsteer loader and skidsteer attachments.

If a skidsteer is part of the equation, there are three skidsteer attachments that are indispensable for getting the job done sans calamine and back pain. These skidsteer attachments would be the Tree Shear, Log Splitter, and Stump Grinder.

TREE SHEAR Tree shear skidsteer attachments are nothing short of amazing. Just looking at them would not make anyone think they were made for "cutting down" trees. They are big and sturdy, yes. But they look like a giant pair of scissors.

The tree shear skidsteer attachments allow a driver to drive right up to any tree up to 14 inches in diameter. They can cut through even larger trees if they are of a softer wood variety.

The main frame and blade of these skidsteer attachments are made from inch-thick T1 steel, so they are extremely tough and durable. But they do not stop there. Once a tree is cut and on the ground, the tree shears can pivot at the base to cut the timber into sections.

THE LOG SPLITTER As with many existing skidsteer attachments, the skidsteer log splitter is an adaptation of a dedicated, standalone machine. But in this form, it can be taken any place and powered by the skidsteer. That is very convenient if wood to be split is someplace out of the way. The log splitter skidsteer attachments are available in two versions: one is upright and splits logs on its top, and its twin is an inverted unit without the external control valve. A very useful feature is the single pin attachment which make the log splitter skidsteer attachments incredibly easy to remove and relocate when not in use.

THE STUMP GRINDER One of the main reasons to get this work done now, before the cold weather sets in, is that all the felled trees have stumps that need to be ground into mulch. Even though the stump grinder skidsteer attachments are fully capable of tearing out stumps in the dead of winter, it is a great idea to have that mulch buried and rotting in the soil for a few months prior to the first freeze. Anything that is planned for the cleared property will benefit from healthy topsoil in the Spring. The stump grinder skidsteer attachments are formidable. But the difference is in the precision with which they can be placed on a stump. Traditional grinders make sweeping passes from a static location, but the skidsteer mounted unit makes full use of the skidsteer boom, and can be lifted in and out of action as well as being quickly and easily moved out of the way, leaving a soft pool of mulch where the tree stump once stood.

So do not wait till it is too late to enjoy the advantages of a good supply of winter wood.
