subject: The Dental 3d Conebeam - The Future Of Dentistry [print this page]

Nobody relishes the thought of their next dental appointment, but with the passing of time, more up to date methods and equipment mean that each visit is less traumatic. One of the most recent breakthroughs in dentistry is the dental 3D conebeam, a new way of taking those all important x-rays.

When you visit your dental surgery, it is often the case that you will require x-rays, whether it is to determine the exact situation of the roots, or in preparation for implants. Digital imaging has been available now for some years, lessening the dose of radiation with each ray, and this has now been accompanied with the latest 3D radio graphic technology.

The 3D beam allows for a detailed 3D anatomy of the whole skull, in an affordable and reliable way that is much lower in the dose if radiation it emits. Through this process and advances in CT scanning, there has been a huge breakthrough in the way x-rays are indeed taken when you visit the dentist.

The conebeam is seen as one of, if not the most important advance in dental radiology in recent times, and is proven to be effective for a wide range of applications and treatments. With the introduction of this technology, a 3D image of the patients' skull is now a reality, and the benefits of the system really speak for themselves.

This new technology works by circling the patients' head, the scanner being situated on a mounted rotating arm. The digital scanner projects a carefully controlled x-ray in a cone shaped beam through the patient and onto an amorphous panel made of silicon. As the beam is capable of travelling right through the patient, just one pass around the head and the complete anatomy of the skull is ready to view on a computer screen.

The benefits of this new system for x-rays really speak for themselves. Each scan takes less time and emits less radiation, making the whole process a lot faster and safer. The ability for 360 degree imaging also means that there is no room for error with this innovative way of viewing the skull. The beam technology will pick up on everything in your mouth from missing teeth to soft gum and implants.
